In the opening round of the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship, Jordan Spieth tees off on the short par-4 13th hole at Austin Country Club, leading Matthew Fitzpatrick 3-up.
Spieth’s intention here is clearly to drive the green and put a dagger into the Englishman’s chances.
He did end up on the green. Just the wrong one.
Spieth’s tee ball goes way right, takes a huge bounce and then finds its way onto the 15th green, where an unsuspecting Patrick Cantlay is in the middle of a putt.
(As an aside: for some reason Jimmy Roberts and Nick Faldo make fun of Cantlay for not noticing, and not Spieth for his wayward shot. Weird.)
Anyhow, Spieth would actually make par from there and halve the hole. He’d close out his match four holes later with a par on the 17th to win 3 &1.
