Bryson DeChambeau shot a 1-under par 71 on Sunday at Bay Hill to claim a one-shot victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

DeChambeau, who entered Sunday’s finale one shot behind overnight leader Lee Westwood, finished his final round at Bay Hill with one bogey, two birdies, and 15 pars, including a final-hole knee knocker to clinch the title on 11-under par.

“I’m glad I made that last putt. I did not want to go into a playoff,” said DeChambeau, who drained a 5-foot par putt to avoid a playoff.

“I took a little extra time on that because I knew that ball was aimed a little too far right and sure enough it was. I took a deep breath was able to execute and knock it in.”

The victory was the second of the 2021 season (U.S. Open) for the 27-year old California, and the eighth of his young PGA Tour career.

Q: “Bryson, of all the tournaments, just talk a little bit about what it means to win this tournament, Mr. Palmer’s tournament.”

BRYSON DECHAMBEAU: “Well, when I came here first as an amateur I walked up into his office and he was there and we had a picture together and we were certainly, I was certainly excited to meet him for the first time, not knowing he would leave a lasting impression on me that would last the rest of my life.

“When he signed the book, he said make it legible, and when he said that, that stuck to me and I’ve done it ever since. And he’s had an influence on me for the longest time and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. He’s somebody that I look up to and will continue looking up to.”
