Lucas Glover scorched a rain-softened TPC Deere Run to the tune of 7-under 64 to claim victory at the John Deere Classic and snap a 10-year winless streak.
Glover, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, entered Sunday’s finale four shots off the pace of overnight leader Sebastian Munoz. The Clemson product, though, quickly jumped into the conversation with back-to-back birdies out of the gate and remained among a logjam of twenty or so players separated by three shots through 11 holes.
But starting on the 12th hole, Glover hit the gas pedal, and kept it down – reeling off five birdies over his final seven holes to reach 19-under par, good for a two-shot victory.
“They went in and I kept the pedal down,” said Glover matter of factly.
He added, “It’s been a long 10 years. There’s been some struggles. I knew it was in there. I had to clean up my brain a little bit and just hit some shots, just play golf.
“I never lost sight of believing I could do this and win again. It’s always nice to prove yourself right.”
For his fourth career PGA Tour victory, Glover earned $1,116,000 and 500 FedExCup points. He will move to No. 32 in the FedExCup standings and 40th on the money list.
Glover was already in the field for the Open Championship so runner-up Ryan Moore (68) earned the lone qualifying spot at Royal St. George’s – although it was unclear if he was going to accept the spot, given the hurdles and risks involved with COVID protocols put in place by the UK government.
This week’s Winner’s Circle is powered by the Amazon Titleist Store.
