Aided by a controversial ruling on the 72nd hole, Rory McIlroy claimed his third FedEx Cup title at East Lake Golf Club, becoming the winningest golfer in the 15-year history of the PGA Tour’s playoff exhibition series.
Leading by one shot through 71 holes, McIlroy duck hooked his second shot on the 18th hole into the grandstand wall, where it fell alongside the temporary wall. Almost immediately, without even viewing the location of the ball, the NBC crew started calling for “relief.” The broadcast, though, never showed McIlroy stretching out to show how much, if at all, his swing was impeded. Instead, we got a closeup of Rory dropping his ball – not once, not twice, but three times, and then placing it down a fourth time, so it sat up nice and fluffy on a thick area of grass.
After getting questionable relief, McIlroy would get on the green and two putt for par to edge Scottie Scheffler (73), who was unable to make birdie to force a tie.
With the victory, which doesn’t count as an official win, McIlroy won $18 million, which also doesn’t count towards the money race or career earnings.
This week’s Winner’s Circle is powered by Titleist Pro V1 Golf Balls.
