CROMWELL, Conn. – Wyndham Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, issued a heartfelt apology Thursday for damaging lockers at Oakmont Country Club’s historic clubhouse after missing the cut at the 2025 U.S. Open.

The 31-year-old, who carded back-to-back 74s to finish 8-over par, one stroke shy of the cut, admitted his frustration boiled over after bogeying his final hole on Friday.

Photos surfaced on social media showing two caved-in locker doors, sparking widespread criticism from fans and Oakmont members, who called the act disrespectful to the revered venue.

“I’ve had highs and lows in my career, especially this year,” Clark said at the Travelers Championship, where he opened with a 6-under 64. “I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I’m very sorry for what happened.”

This marks Clark’s second apology in recent majors. At the 2025 PGA Championship, he damaged a T-Mobile sign after a wayward drive, later vowing to better handle his emotions. Despite the backlash, Clark expressed a desire to move forward, eyeing a Ryder Cup spot and a FedEx Cup push.

“I want to focus on the rest of the year,” he added.

The incident, confirmed by Oakmont officials, drew mixed reactions. While some demanded a suspension, others, like LIV golfer Graeme McDowell, noted Oakmont’s brutal conditions test even the steeliest pros. For now, Clark’s focus shifts to redemption on the course, starting with a strong showing in Connecticut.
