Wyndham Clark shot a final-round 68 to claim his maiden PGA Tour title at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship.
Clark entered Sunday’s finale at Quail Hollow as the overnight leader, but after a slow start (bogey on the first followed by six straight pars) the 29-year-old surrendered the pole position to Xander Schauffele (70). Clark heated up, though, with a chip-in birdie on the eighth hole, and then chased it with four more birdies on hole Nos. 10, 12, 14 and 15. A meaningless bogey on the final hole gave Clark a 19 under par total, four clear of Schauffele.
“I didn’t hit it as well and didn’t make as many putts as maybe I did the day before, but mentally I was super strong,” said Clark.
“I didn’t start out great. I was kind of shaky. I think in years past I might have folded. But this time I stayed patient and hung in there and caught fire on the back nine.”
With a $3.6 million winner’s check, Clark moves to No. 5 on the PGA Tour’s 2023 money list.
Harris English (69) and Tyrrell Hatton (70) finished T3 on 12 under, one ahead of Adam Scott (71) and Tommy Fleetwood (70), who rounded out the top-5 finishers in Charlotte.
