The PGA Championship tees off at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey this week. Jason Day is the defending champ, winning at Whistling Straits last year to capture his first major championship with a record 20-under-par.
This is Baltusrol’s second time hosting the PGA Championship. Phil Mickelson famously won at the Springfield’s challenging track with a score of 4-under-par in 2005.
Despite Day’s ranking as the world number one and defending champ, Dustin Johnson is the favorite at 8/1, thanks to two wins and no finishes outside the top 10 in his last six starts.
He will look to continue his hot stretch of play this week.
Rory Mcilroy (9/1) is seeking to take the attention off of his controversial comments about the Olympics and add another major championship to his resume.
Day, who has cooled off a bit, but has played solid lately (Top 25 in last 4 starts), is also at 9/1, and will look to hold onto the Wanamaker Trophy.
Jordan Spieth checks in at 10/1 to round out the Big 4. The 22-year-old has two wins and plenty of top 10 finishes this season, but when Spieth catapulted himself to number one in the world by capturing the first two majors of the season last year, expectations grew and the fans and media soon expected him to be in contention every Sunday, something he has expressed frustration over.
Despite what may seem like a down year by last season’s standards, Spieth is still number three in the world and a threat heading into any tournament he plays.
Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson, 16/1 and 20/1, respectively, close out the top of this jam packed list. The two came out of nowhere at the Open, and took part in one of the best duels in major championship history, a duel in which Stenson bested Phil with a record-tying 63. Both will be looking to keep it up and once again take down the young guns at a major.
