Christine Wolf made history on Thursday, becoming the first woman to lead a European Tour event after an opening-round 64 at the 2021 Scandinavian Mixed Hosted by Henrik & Annika. She shared the day-one lead with Sam Horsfield at 8 under.

After going out in 2-under 34 at the acclaimed Vallda Golf & Country Club, the Austrian came home in a blistering 6-under 30 to sign for a 64 and set the mark on 8-under par.

Wolf, who had her mother on the bag, was bogey free with six birdies and an eagle, highlighted by a late three-hole span of birdie-eagle-birdie on Nos. 5-17 to take her place in the history books.

“We love competing against the guys, we’ve had a few mixed events at home,” said Wolf.

“It’s just fun. At home there’s a lot of guys I play against, and I really like competing against them.”

She added: “I started quite well and birdied the first two par fives that came up and actually hit it quite close on some of the holes but didn’t make any putts on the front nine.

“Then all of a sudden, I hit it close and towards the end the putter got really hot. It was nice!

“I’ve been hitting it really well especially my drives, they’re down the middle. I know I can hit it really hard, and it will still stay straight. I’m trusting my game.”

Horsfield, meanwhile, birdied two of his final three holes to join Wolf atop the big board.

The 24-year-old finished with nine birdies against one bogey. The Englishman’s round was highlighted by birdies on all four of the par 5s.

“It was just really solid,” said Horsfield.

“I haven’t really been taking advantage of the par fives this year, so that was my main goal. I hit every fairway and played them in four under today.

“That gets you going – four under right there, toss in a couple more and it’s eight under.”

They were a shot clear of Spaniard Pep Angles, Finn Kalle Samooja, and England’s Steven Brown and Ashley Chesters, who were all T3 on 7-under 65.

England’s Felicity Johnson, Swedish amateur Vincent Norrman, Welshman Oliver Farr and South African Darren Fichardt were then 6 under.

Tournament hosts Henrik Stenson (70) and Annika Sorenstam (73) played in the same grouping, alongside Thomas Bjorn (73).
