John Daly and Michael Allen teamed for a bogey-free 8-under 64 to take the lead into the weekend at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf.

Despite temperatures unseasonably cold at Big Cedar Lodge, the twosome of Daly and Allen were pretty hot on Friday, teaming up for eight birdies at the Top of the Rock course, highlighted by four gains in a six-hole stretch (Nos. 8-13).

Afterwards, Daly credited the camaraderie he enjoys with teammate Allen.

“I mean, Michael and I go back to the South African days in the late 80’s and playing that Tour, and we’ve been buddies since. He’s just fun to play with. We feed off each other pretty good,” said Daly, a two-time major winner.

“And if he’s not comfortable guinea pigging on one hole, I’ll go first, like we did on that side.

“We’re a good team, and he’s putting really, really well. So our alternate shots today, he putted was really big for us and he played brilliant on the back nine.”

Englishman Paul Broadhurst and Kirk Triplett carded a 48 at Top of the Rock to reach 12-under par and sit T2, alongside defending champions Carlos Franco and Vijay Singh, who posted a 7-under 37 at the new 13-hole, Gary Player-designed Mountain Top course.

Tom Lehman and Bernhard Langer, winners of this event in 2009, also shot a 48 at Top of the Rock to join the groups at T2.

“We hit it fairly close, and Tom made some really good putts. That was really it. If you got it within six or 10 feet, you had a much better chance than having 20-, 30-footer,” said Langer.

The teams of David Toms and Steve Flesch (34, MT), Brandt Jobe and Scott McCarron (47, TR), and Miguel Angel Jiménez and José María Olazábal (48, TR) are tied for fifth at 11-under par.

Opening-round leaders Jeff Maggert and Jesper Parnevik posted two early bogeys (Nos. 3 and 4) en route to a 2-under 52 at the Top of Rock to fall to T8 at 10-under par, alongside Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly (32, MT) and Roger Chapman and David Frost (47, TR).
