Final-Round Odds: No Doubting Thomas at CJ Cup

Justin Thomas CJ Cup

The online sport books think Justin Thomas (-9) will close the deal on Sunday (Saturday night in the States) and win PGA Tour title No. 7 at the CJ Cup.

The ‘live’ books at Bovada have the reigning PGA Champion, and 54-hole co-leader, now listed at 12-1, and no one else is really even close.

Journeyman Scott Brown (-9), who is tied with Thomas for the 54-hole lead, is next at 55-1.

Marc Leishman (-7) has odds of 65-1, while Anirban Lahiri (-7) is listed at 90-1. No one else in the field has better than 100-1 odds.

ANALYSIS

Looking at the field, in terms of past performance, other than Marc Leishman, there is no player within 5 shots who has a history even winning, never mind closing on Sunday.

Co-leader Brown, 34, is a one-time winner of an opposite-field event (Puerto Rico, 2013), and currently ranked 125 in the world.

Lahiri, who is tied with Leishman at 7-under, is still seeking career win No. 1 on the big tour.

The group of three tied at 6-under, includes Cameron Smith, who won the team-event at the Zurich Classic but is winless in stroke play; Lucas Glover, who is in search of his first win in six years, and Whee Kim, world No. 202.

Meanwhile, Thomas is coming off a season in which he won five times; captured the FedExCup title; and was named PGA Tour Player of the Year.

And how’s this for past performance? Thomas’ record when holding the 54-hole lead/co-lead:

No Doubting Thomas

2015 CareerBuilder Challenge T7
2015 CIMB Classic 1
2017 Sentry Tournament of Champions 1
2017 Sony Open in Hawaii 1
2017 WGC-Mexico Championship T5
2017 Dell Technologies Championship 1

As Jordan Spieth said after the Dell Technologies Championship in Boston, where Thomas pulled away from his buddy to win by three: “Obviously he’s become a tremendous closer. What he did today, it’s tough when you’ve got somebody that’s that good and hot and can close, and he’s two shots ahead of you starting the day.”
