After 36 holes of play at Colonial Country Club, there is a four-way tie at the top, with Webb Simpson, Kevin Kisner, Danny Lee and Scott Piercy all at 6-under 134.

Lee had the low round of the day with a 64, punctuated by a birdie on the final hole.

One back of the leaders, at 5-under, is another foursome, which includes Masters champion Sergio Garcia (66), rookie phenom Jon Rahm (69), Englishman Paul Casey (66) and Sean O’Hair (68).

Defending champion Jordan Spieth overcame a difficult start (+3 thru 5) by going 5-under over his final 13 holes. The two-time major winner is at 2-under, and just four shots back.

Phil Mickelson started the day at 3-under. But after a 5-over 75, the two-time Colonial champ is at 2-over, eight shots back.

Bullets

  • Simpson has led/co-led after the second round seven previous times in his PGA Tour career. The last time he held a share of the 36-hole lead was in this event last year. He posted 67-68 on the weekend and finished T3. His lone win after holding the lead/co-lead at the midway point came at the 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
  • Kisner has led/co-led after 36 holes of a Tour event was the 2015 World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions where he held a two-stroke advantage over eventual champion Russell Knox heading into the weekend. Kisner carded 70-70 over the final 36 holes for a solo second.
  • This marks the first time Lee has led/co-led after 36 holes of a Tour event.
  • Piercy has held the 36-hole lead/co-lead twice in his career on Tour. He converted the second-round co-lead into a victory at the 2012 RBC Canadian Open where he posted 67-67 on the weekend.
  • The second-round leader/co-leader has won just 12 of 27 stroke-play events this season, most recently Sergio Garcia at the Masters Tournament.

Quotable

“I played solid. Was just proud of myself to finish. I was so tired. I haven’t been feeling good all week. After about nine holes I told my caddie, ‘just get me in the house.’ Couple sloppy shots coming in, but the putter kind of saved me missing a couple greens and whatnot. Overall, happy with it. Nice to see the putter show up a little bit. Hit a lot of quality shots today. Felt like I had a good game plan and executed well. Hopefully I can keep doing it for the weekend.”
Scott Piercy, Co-leader

“It’s always tricky around here. Fairways are not easy to hit. But I kind of hung in there early. I wasn’t hitting it great and started hitting it better coming in and made some great birdies. I made a lot of putts. Couple good par putts and then made some good birdie putts at the end.”
Webb Simpson, Co-leader

“After making bogey at — what hole was it, 15? I three-putted from 40 feet. It was just tough, tough putt there. Had a good finish. I was hitting the ball very nicely today. I wasn’t really worried after making bogey on 15. I had strong finish, and that’s what I exactly need to have good momentum carrying over next couple days. It was a good round today.”
Danny Lee, Co-leader

“I only had one bogey each day. Played nicely coming down the fairway, which you got to do around here. Probably got all better into the draw with the weather, the wind laying down this afternoon and picking up yesterday afternoon. So it’s been a nice two days for me.”
Kevin Kisner, Co-leader
