The 2028 Summer Olympics in L.A. could be adding a third medaling competition to the golf space.

A mixed-team golf event is in the works, according to the AP.

Olympic officials are reportedly close to announcing a mixed-team competition, with its own set of medals for the 2028 Summer Games at Riviera Country Club. The announcement is expected to coincide with the Masters Tournament, the season’s first major.

Golf returned to the Olympics during the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. England’s Justin Rose captured the gold medal in the men’s tournament while Inbee Park won the women’s title.

Golf again was part of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (contested in 2021 due to the covid virus). USA’s Xander Schauffele and Nelly Korda claimed the gold, respectively.

The 2024 Olympic Golf Tournament will be played at Le Golf National outside of Paris, the same venue that hosted the 2018 Ryder Cup.

It’s four years away, but some of the pairings could include Rory McIlroy and Leona Maguire of Ireland, Jon Rahm and Carlota Ciganda of Spain, Hideki Matsuyama and Nasa Hataoka of Japan, Tom Kim and Jin Young Ko of Korea, Matt Fitzpatrick and Charley Hull of England, Ludvig Aberg and Linn Grant of Sweden, Corey Conners and Brooke Henderson of Canada, Cam Smith and Minjee Lee of Australia, Mathieu Pavon and Celine Boutier of France, and Abraham Ancer and Gaby Lopez of Mexico.
