Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, is riding a wave of strong performances in 2025, climbing to No. 49 in the Official World Golf Ranking and securing spots in multiple major championships, including next month’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club, officials confirmed.
Reed, 34, earned his PGA Championship berth through his world ranking, bolstered by a solo third-place finish at the Masters last week, where he carded a 9-under-par to finish behind winner Rory McIlroy. The result, his best at Augusta since his 2018 victory, propelled him from outside the top 60 to No. 49, ensuring his place in the May 15-18 event at Quail Hollow, a course hosting its second PGA Championship after 2017.
The Texan, who joined LIV Golf in 2022, has also secured a spot in The Open Championship, set for July 17-20 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Reed qualified with a runner-up finish behind Carlos Ortiz at the International Series Macau on the Asian Tour in March, one of three Open Qualifying Series events offering spots to top finishers.
Reed is poised to return to the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, June 12-15, provided he remains in the top 60 of the world rankings after the PGA Championship, the cutoff date for automatic exemptions. His current No. 49 ranking positions him well to end a one-year absence from the event, having missed the 2024 U.S. Open and snapping a streak of 41 consecutive major appearances.

“It’s been a good year so far,” Reed said after his Masters performance. “I’m playing solid golf, and it’s nice to be back in the mix at the big events.” Reed’s 2025 campaign includes four top-10 finishes in five non-LIV Golf events, showcasing his ability to compete against top fields despite limited opportunities to earn ranking points on the LIV circuit, which does not contribute to the Official World Golf Ranking.
Reed’s resurgence comes after a challenging 2024, where he struggled to qualify for majors outside the Masters, to which he has lifetime entry as a past champion. His strong Masters showing and consistent play in international events have quieted critics who questioned his form since joining LIV Golf.
At Quail Hollow, Reed aims to improve on his T53 finish at the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla, where he shot 9-under-par. His familiarity with the Charlotte course, a regular PGA Tour stop, could be an advantage. Reed finished runner-up to Justin Thomas in 2017 edition of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow and twice posted top-10 finishes at the Charlotte-hosted Wells Fargo.

For the U.S. Open, Reed’s ranking provides a cushion, but he faces pressure to maintain his form. The PGA Championship offers a critical opportunity to accrue additional ranking points before the June 9 cutoff. A top performance could also solidify his case for a fourth Ryder Cup appearance later this year.
Reed’s schedule includes LIV Golf events in Mexico City (April 25-27) and South Korea (May 2-4) before the PGA Championship, keeping him sharp for the major.
“I’m just focused on playing my game,” Reed said. “The results are coming, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
As Reed prepares for a busy major season, his “Captain America” nickname, earned through standout Ryder Cup performances, resonates anew. With spots in at least two majors secured and a third likely, 2025 is shaping up as a comeback year for the polarizing star.
