Rory McIlroy, who hasn’t won a major since about the Carter administration, needled Justin Thomas for not being able to secure a second major since claiming his first in 2017.
During a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the 2021 PGA Championship, McIlroy was asked how important it was to win a second major in 2012 at Kiawah Island. The Northern Irishman spotted Thomas waiting to enter the media room, and swung away.
“Yeah, it was huge,” said McIlroy, looking in Thomas’ direction. “A lot of guys have won one major, but it’s a big hurdle to get to the second.
“It was good to get that monkey off my back. I definitely didn’t want to be stuck on one for a long time, so happy to get that second.”
Thomas said, “Well played.”
He added, “I can’t really say too much. Other than it’s great to see him win (at the Wells Fargo). I know it’s been a really long time for him, so I’m glad to see him win.”
FWIW: Since JT joined the PGA Tour in the 2016 season, he owns 14 wins and a major. Over that same period, Rory has won 8 times with no majors.
Also, check that. It was not the Carter administration. It was the Obama/Biden administration. Same thing.
