Davis Love III is recovering from open-heart surgery, according to CBS’ Jim Nantz, a longtime friend.
The voice of CBS golf made the announcement on Saturday, during the final-round broadcast of Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
Love, 60, later confirmed it in a released statement.
The major winner and Hall of Famer said the procedure was performed “to resolve a valve issue that my doctors had been monitoring for the last 10 years.”
“The procedure was successful and I’m now at home recovering,” said Love in a statement. “I went in healthy and came out healthier.”
Love thanked his team of doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.
“I’m grateful for them and their teams’ expertise and care, and I am motivated to prove them right and get back to playing golf by this summer!” Love said.
Love, a 21-time PGA Tour winner, captured his lone major at the 1997 PGA Championship at Winged Foot. He also won the Players Championship twice (1992, 2003) and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017.
Love is best known to a new generation of golf fans as the captain and vice-captain of multiple U.S. Ryder Cup and U.S. President Cup teams. He is the host of the PGA Tour’s annual stop at Sea Island, the RSM Classic.
