In a last-ditch attempt to become eligible for this year’s Ryder Cup matches in Rome, Sergio Garcia attempted to pay off fines to the DP World Tour, according to a report in the UK Telegraph.
Garcia’s offer was quickly declined by the UAE-funded DP World Tour.
The source in the Telegraph’s report stated, “It was explained that, despite the ongoing peace talks, as he had resigned his membership, he is not eligible to join until next year.
“It was all a bit bizarre as that was made clear all along.”
Garcia, a major champion, is considered one of the greatest-ever Ryder Cup players. In the 2021 matches at Whistling Straits, the iconic Spaniard extended his all-time points record to 28.5 points. He also became the all-time leader in most foursome points with 13.5 and sits tied with Ian Woosnam and Jose Maria Olazabal for most fourball points with 10.5. He owns a 25-13-7 record in 10 Ryder Cup appearances.
The 2023 Ryder Cup matches will tee off next week, Sept. 29 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy.
