Rewind: Rory McIlroy’s Stats, Scores and Styles at the Wells Fargo

A look back at each of the four rounds of Rory McIlroy at the 2021 Wells Fargo, and how he went from T73 on Thursday to the winner’s circle on Sunday: what he scored, how he played, and (of course) what styles he was selling.

Paired with Patrick Reed in the opening two rounds, McIlroy opened with a 72 to sit T73. The 32-year old didn’t play terrible, but he just couldn’t get anything to drop. He finished with two birdies against three bogeys.

It wasn’t all bad on Thursday, though, as his outfit was the best of the week – at least in our opinion.

McIlroy started with four pars but then reeled off three birdies in a four hole stretch to turn on 3 under. From this point on, it appeared he was back to his old self. He mixed two birdies with one bogey on his first four holes heading home, and then added a sixth birdie late to card a 66. He was tied for fifth now and just two off the pace.

This outfit was our least favorite of the four, yet it delivered the best results. Again, go figure.

Score: -4

6 Birdies, 11 Pars, 1 Bogeys (66, -5)
Driving: 314.5 yards

McIlroy made four birdies in his first eight holes and turned in 4-under 31, but a double on the 12th neatly derailed his round. He settled down with a couple of pars, one a par save, then gained one of the shots back with a birdie on the 15th to finish 3-under 68. He would enter the final round tied for second and just two back. He was now the clear favorite.

5 Birdies, 12 Pars, 0 Bogeys, 1 Double (68, -3)
Driving: 323.3 yards
Fairways: 7/14 50.0%

McIlroy birdied Nos. 3 and 7 to reach 9 under total through seven holes, and move into a share of the lead. He went ahead for good with back to back birdies on 14 and 15. A final round 68 put him at 10 under for the tournament, good for a two-stroke win.
