Michele Thomson shot a career-low 65 and was the surprise day-one leader of the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open.

The 33-year-old Scot got off to a wild start with two bogeys offset by an eagle on her first seven holes. But the former police officer settled down and closed with seven birdies on her final 11 holes to reach the marquee position on 7 under.

“I’m delighted with how I started,” said Thomson, who holds a world ranking of 599. “Obviously, it was a bit of a shaky start with a bogey at the first but seven birdies and eagle, can’t ask for much more.

“Growing up playing links golf and up at 7 a.m. with no wind, getting out – had to shoot a good score.”

Thai Jasmine Suwannapura, Denmark’s Anne van Dam and Pilipino Yuka Saso were tied for second on 5-under 67, one clear of a 10-player logjam at T5.

Suwannapura’s major-winning compatriots, Ariya Jutanugarn and Patty Tavatanakit, were among nine more players tied for 15th-place at 3 under.
