JORDAN SPIETH

A look at some of the quotes from the top players after the second round of the WGC-Mexico Championship at Club de Golf Chapultepec, where Shubhankar Sharma leads Sergio Garcia, Rafael Cabrera Bello, and Xander Schauffele by one shot.

Players highlighted include Sharma, Garcia, Bubba Watson, and Jordan Spieth.

SHUBHANKAR SHARMA

Did you have a surreal moment this week hitting golf balls next to Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth?

SHARMA: Every day. Even in the hotel, the gym, we see so many of these guys in the gym. Some of them say hi to me, which is very nice.

Just a few months ago I remember watching the PGA TOUR back home after midnight because that’s when it’s on back home. So I’m really happy, it’s a total dream come true.

Practicing with all these good players on the range, Spieth was right behind me, and after a couple shots just come back and watch and then Dustin replaced him, so it’s like I couldn’t ask for anything better.

SERGIO GARCIA

Looking at how small these greens are, does that kind of feed into your ball-striking? Your stats for the week are very, very good.

GARCIA: Well, it’s the kind of golf courses I like. You know, Valderrama is my favorite golf course, small greens. Sawgrass, one of my favorite golf courses, small greens.
So I do like these kind of courses better, and when it gets a bit firmer like it’s getting and a bit more challenging, I do feel — even though it’s not easy, I do feel a bit more comfortable.

I feel like my ball-striking can do most of the talking, so I’m not — that’s what I was able to do today.

BUBBA WATSON

More comfortable with the distances? Do you have a formula dialed in? Do you let Teddy do that or is that a cooperation?

WATSON: Yeah, we have a cheat sheet. We were in the room doing a bunch of homework. When I say we, it was Teddy doing a bunch of homework. He was making sure all the numbers were right. We have all the numbers, we can look at a little cheat sheet that we made.

You know, it’s just getting everything right. I mean, my ball striking is there. Today again my distances were better, played a little safer on a couple shots that I messed up yesterday, so it worked out.

JORDAN SPIETH

Do you feel like you’re just maybe a day away, one good day from being where you want to be with your game?

SPIETH: Yeah, I think so. I really got the putter going at Riviera and I felt awesome over the putter the middle two rounds there, and Sunday started to have it going, too.

There’s been these like nine holes where it’s showing, but to be able to put it together for three out of four rounds or whatever it needs to be to win a golf tournament, yeah, it’s close, but there’s still progress that needs to be made.
