Nelly Korda secured her fifth straight LPGA victory on Sunday at The Chevron Championship, edging Maja Stark by two shots at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, TX.
Korda finished the last seven holes of her third round on Sunday morning, and entered Sunday’s finale on 3-under 69, good for T2 alongside Brooke Henderson, and one off the pace of 54-hole leader Haeran Ryu.
Teeing off about three hours later, Korda made pars on the first two holes before picking up a pair of birdies on Nos. 3 and 4 to jump into the lead by a deuce on 12-under.
The 25-year-old star scored a third birdie on the par-5 8th to reach 13 under, and after a par on the No. 9 hole, Korda tuned in 33, while holding a three-shot advantage. She added a fourth birdie on the par-4 10th to move to 14-under par before dropping her first shot of day on No. 11 to fall back to 13 under.
With just a handful of holes to play, Korda held a four-shot lead. But the Florida native stumbled with a bogey on the par-5 15th hole, coupled with a birdie by Lauren Coughlin on the par-5 18th hole, and Korda’s lead was down to just two with three to play.
After pars on Nos. 16 and 17, Korda’s lead remained two with just the 18th hole standing between her and a second major championship trophy – the Dinah Shore Trophy.
But Stark, who was playing in the group ahead, put real pressure on Korda with back-to-birdies on 17 and 18 to reach 11 under. Korda’s lead had been shaved to just one.
Korda, though, calmly piped her drive down the middle of the fairway and then landed her approach shot to within 30 feet of the hole. She ran her eagle attempt past the hole by a couple of feet, but easily made the come-backer for birdie to claim her second career major title, finishing with a four-day total of 13 under, two clear of the field.
“It’s just been a crazy, crazy, crazy couple of weeks, with some really solid golf. I can finally breathe,” said Korda in her winning press conference, still damp from her leap into the lake by 18.
“I was really nervous on that back nine. I really, really wanted this win. It feels amazing to get it. My first-ever major, competing in a major, was at the U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack, and that was when I dreamt of winning major championships. To have two under my belt now is a dream come true.”
The win was Korda’s 13th LPGA career victory, becoming the 31st American to earn 13 or more wins on the LPGA Tour. She’s also the 52nd player to own two or more major titles (2021 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and The 2024 Chevron Championship).
Even more history: Korda joins LPGA legends Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam as the only players since 1978 to win five consecutive LPGA titles. She will have a chance to top that pair next week as Korda is currently scheduled to play in the JM Eagle LA Championship.
“I’m going to enjoy this right now, and then I’ll think about that,” said Korda with a smile.
“It’s been an amazing time. Hopefully, I’ll keep the streak alive. But I’ve been so grateful to compete week in and week out and get the five in a row.”
