PGA Tour Scraps Steph Curry-Hosted Event Slated For Fall 2019

According to a report in the SF Chronicle, the PGA Tour has nixed plans for a Steph Curry-hosted tournament at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, slated for September 2019.

Tour officials were expected to announce the specifics of the new event at one of the California stops (Pebble Beach?) this month, and they even went so far as to block out dates on the calendar (Sept. 19-22) for it to be included in the fall’s wrap-around portion of the 2019-20 season.

But negotiations with targeted title sponsor Workday – the finance and human resources software company based in nearby Pleasanton (CA), fell apart at the last minute, leaving Tour officials scrambling and unable to find a replacement sponsor in time.

A regular PGA Tour event generally has a purse in the $6-8 million range, and title sponsors are required to put up the total purse along with another $3-4 million to underwrite additional event operations and expenses.

“We are still committed to bringing an event to San Francisco. It just won’t be this year,” Curry told the SF Chronicle.
